We can accept household hazardous waste (HHW). For example, 

Garden & Workshop: Propane tanks, Pool Chemicals, Adhesives & Glues, Thinners & Strippers, Rodent Poisons, Bug Sprays, Weed Sprays, Herbicides, Fertilizers.

Kitchen & Bath: Aerosols, Drain Cleaners, Bleach, Oven Cleaners, Upholstery Cleaners Liquid Cleaners, Acids and Ammonia Cleaners.


Garage & Auto: Car Batteries, Antifreeze, Motor Oil and Oil Filters, Tires (9 tires max per resident)

Gasoline, Grease and degreasers, Wax, Polish and cleaner, Transmission Fluid, and Brake Fluid.


Personal Care: Perfume, Nail Polish, Acetone, Hairspray, Perm Chemical, Hair dyes, Deodorant. ( Products containing: Diethyl phthalate, dimethyl phthalate, or dibutyl phthalate.)

Home: Household Batteries, Printers Without Cartridges, Fluorescent Bulbs, TVs, VCR & DVD Players, Microwaves, Scanners, Computers, Monitors, Laptops and tablets.


We also accept paper, glass, plastic, and aluminum but we don't give compensation for those items.

No, IVRMA does not accept paint. The following are businesses where residents can properly dispose of paint.

Yes, IVRMA does accept fire extinguishers only if the extinguishers are pressurized. For the convenience of the residents of Imperial Valley, we have three facilities in three different cities. The following are the Household Hazardous Waste facilities you can visit to dispose of pressurized extinguishers:

El Centro: 702 E Heil Ave. (open every Saturday)
Calexico: 500 W 5th St. (open every other Sunday)
Brawley: 180 S Western Ave. (open every other Sunday)

  • If residents want to dispose of fire extinguishers that are depressurized residents can dispose of them at SA Recyling. Contact them at 760-352-2630 or visit SA Recycling.

IVRMA accepts syringes or "sharps" as long as the syringes are properly sealed in a container. Residents can visit any of our three Household Hazardous Waste facilities for proper disposal.

  • We can accept contaminated syringes, needles, lancets, scalpels, infusion needle sets, connection needles, auto-injectors

  • IVRMA has partnered with CR&R to offer El Centro residents FREE red sharp containers. For more information on how to get your sharps container, contact CR&R at 760-482-5656 or call our office at 1(877) RECYCLE.

No, IVRMA does not accept scrap metals. You can visit the following recycling centers to help our planet, our sources of natural resources, and our landfills. Residents can visit the following recycling centers to properly dispose of scrap metal.

IVRMA accepts all “white goods” or appliances. White goods include refrigerators, stoves, ovens, washers, and dryers. To dispose of other bulky items such as couches, mattresses, or furniture residents of the incorporated cities; El Centro, Holtville, Westmorland, Calipatria, Imperial, Brawley, and Calexico, can contact their trash service provider to schedule an appointment for pick up.

  • CR&R offers a collection of four bulky items three per year at no cost. For El Centro, Holtville, Calipatria, and Westmorland residents, you can contact CR&R at 760-482-5656 or visit www.cr&r.com.

  • Republic Services offers a collection of four bulky items once a month for the city of Calexico and Imperial. The collection of three bulky items, once a month is offered to residents of Brawley. Residents can call Republic Services at 760-355-0004 or visit www.republicservices.com.

We are not trash haulers, please contact your designated trash hauler for these inquiries. 


Batteries contain chemicals that harm the environment. IVRMA offers you three facilities to correctly dispose of all types of batteries and this service is completely free of charge for all residents of the Imperial Valley.

The following is a list of items that can be taken to the landfill; tree trimmings, grass, trash, wood, furniture, mattresses, and couches. Please note that household hazardous waste cannot be disposed of at landfills. Visit our Household Hazardous Waste program to learn where to dispose of hazardous waste.

Republic Service customers contracted in the cities of Brawley, Calexico, and Imperial can dispose of waste at the Imperial Landfill Service free of charge. Residents of Brawley and Calexico can dispose of trash 4 times a year. Residents of Imperial can dispose of trash 6 times a year. The hours of operation are Monday through Friday 8 am to 3:30 pm.

CR&R customers contracted in the cities of El Centro, Calipatria, Westmorland, Holtville, and Heber can drop off waste on Saturdays from 8 am to 12 noon at their transfer station. CR&R customers are allowed 2 free truckloads per day and loads must be covered. Residents must provide their ID and water bill to confirm they are paid city residents.

For residents of the unincorporated cities (Seeley, Ocotillo, Niland, Salton Sea, Bombay Beach, Palo Verde) you can drop off waste at the Imperial Landfill with a fee.
